The season for REI Melons from Brazil's finest specialty melon grower, Itaueira, has begun and promises a steady supply of sweet, floral Canary and Piel de Sapo melons through the winter months. John Vena, Inc. has partnered with Itaueira as the exclusive distributor of REI Melons for the Philadelphia metro region, serving the Mid-Atlantic's Brazil melon needs for the season, which is expected to extend through February of 2016. These unique melons offer something more than the common cantaloupe or well-worn watermelon. Aromatic, complex, and pleasantly mellow, the flavor is approachable for any melon-lover, but new and different enough to satisfy even the most adventurous eaters!
Itaueira's melons are grown using Integrated Pest Management principles, organic fertilizers, and innovative water and soil conservation practices. Grown from Itaueira's own select seeds, REI Melons are all-natural and GMO-free - the perfect choice for healthy, environmentally-conscious lifestyles. GlobalGAP certified and fully traceable from field to fork, REI Melons offer premium quality, consistency, and safety. Their distinctive netted packaging is ideal for that high-end retail touch and leaves a lasting impression with consumers across demographics. A must-have for any successful winter fruit program!
REI Canary Melons, also known as Yellow Honeydew, are bright yellow in color, with pretty, pale green-white pulp. Their mellow, sweet flavor with a hint of tartness pairs well with a range of flavors like citrus, ginger, mint, and honey. Choose melons that are firm and heavy.
REI Piel de Sapo ("Toad Skin" panish!) melons are traditionally harvested in fall and stored until winter when they are enjoyed as a holiday treat, hence its other names: Santa Claus or Christmas Melon. Their soft, pale white flesh is floral and sweet - like an exceptional honeydew - and pairs well with meats and cheeses. Choose melons with a light give around the blossom end.
Itaueira is a family-owned company, founded in 1983 and based in Fortaleza in eastern Brazil. They started their operations growing cashew apples and cashew nuts, but now specialize in top quality fresh melons. Their highly skilled team ensures a strict quality control process, closely monitoring all seeds from planting to point-of-sale. Itaueira incorporates modern soil preparation, planting, fertilization, harvest and post-harvest techniques into their farming practices. Their farms are strategically located in the states of Piauí, Ceará, and Bahia, in order to maximize the season for their specialty melons.
