Tejocotes

Prized as the main ingredient in a Mexican Christmas-time punch called "Ponche", the similarity to the apple stops at the physical resemblance. The tejocotes actually has a very high level of pectin, which is a naturally occurring substance known to add a thickening element. The fruit must be boiled before consumption, giving it a creamy, sweet taste and texture.
